Presumably, hyperglycemia promotes cellular dehydration because:

A glucose, as an energy source, accelerates the osmotic work performed by plasma membranes.

B glucose, as an energy source, accelerates plasma membrane ion exchange pumps.

C glucose molecules raise the osmotic pressure of the extracellular space.

D glucose molecules are exchanged for water molecules across the plasma membrane. can someone explain why the answer is C thanks

Answer #1

C glucose molecules raise the osmotic pressure of the extracellular space.

Explanation: The more glucose is released from glycogen the more osmotic pressure rises of body fluids and dehydrates cells because glucose gets transported into the cells by facilitated diffusion which simply means that glucose goes from higher concentrations to lower concentration i.e. if in the body the glucose concentrations is high the cell will get a huge number of glucose molecules, more than required and then as a reaction to over-saturation with glucose, the body will start acquiring more fluids to balance out the glucose concentration and to flush out the excess glucose, which in case if not provided in such amount will result in dehydration and increased osmotic pressure due to lack of fluid in extracellular space.
