Describe an example of disinformation you have come across on the web, how social tools can be used to spread disinformation, or an example with explanation of an innovative way an organization is using these tools to promote themselves or help the greater good.
Disinformation is false information spread deliberately to
deceive. One of the recent examples of disinformation was during the
election time, so many fake exit polls were released and police was
going to arrest Hilary and some places they were told to renew
their driving licenses to vote. This had created a lot of confusion
back then. disinformation is spread to do exactly that. in this era
with the evolution of technology, it is starting to spread more
faster than before.
Now, most of the people get their news from social media. as a
result, they are exposed to a daily dose of hoaxes, rumors etc.for
spreading disinformation, social is the best option for the people
who spread it. as most of us get our news from social media we are
normally gonna believe that the information we came across is true.
a study finds that people might also believe the disinformation fed
to them by a social contact. Most people will spread disinformation
to make money from the ads. if the disinformation is given is a
gossip, people will believe it most of the time without checking
the facts
We are vulnerable to manipulation by disinformation thanks to a
complex set of social, cognitive, economic and algorithmic biases.
most of these have evolved in a good manner. but in today's
shrinking online networks a conspiracy theorist with a social media
account can make us believe whatever he wants us to believe. the
main problem is the limits to verifying the facts. in our circle we
are selectively exposed to information that is aligned with our
beliefs. This is the trick used by disinformation spreaders to
inflict the lies to us more effectively.
Most of the organization uses the disinformation to promote
themselves. Most spread the fake news to increase the income or
gain from it financially in other ways. Most social media companies
do this.this is not true for all companies. like Google, their
business is based on providing the user accurate information. While
the social media and many other sites think of this loophole in the
cyber world as a way to promote themselves, some companies actually
verify the news before publishing. They will always use
disinformation as a way for exploitation, while we the users have
to be careful while believing it.
Hope this helps
