Answer #1

Here first we write the balance equation. After writing the equation it is observed that benzaldehyde and thiamine are the important reagents. Sodium hydroxide and ethanol are acting as bases and solvent so they are not used to calculate the theoretical yield. Now to calculate the theoretical yield we need to know the limiting reagent.

To know the limiting reagent, following steps are to be followed:

1) Write a balanced chemical reaction

2) Convert all the mass to moles and then calculate the mass of product from each reactant

3) The reactant which produces less amount of product will be the limiting reagent.

4) And the amount of product formed from the limiting reagent will be THEORETICAL YIELD.

But in the above question, it is already given that thiamine acts as a catalyst. Thus the only reagent and the limiting reagent is BENZALDEHYDE.

The calculations of the same are shown in the image below:

Dens Mass Velume 7-04 g1ml = Mass 4ml Mass 1,04 ml

etx de Benzoun Beozaldelhyde 2 mo Benaldelyde 212-24

Thus the theoretical yield is 4.160g.
