Answer #1
  1. Social Network sites can be defined through 3 characteristics. One of them is that the platform should be allowing users to create a profile of themselves or their company either public or semi-public within a bounded system. The one who creates the profile can only add the details that the specific platform allows. The second feature is that the platform will allow the user to create a number of connections with the other users. And the third characteristics is the users will be able to view or traverse their or others' list of connections. The feature extent from connecting to known people to find new unknown people. The purpose and nature of the social media network according to the population it is focused on. It has goals other than connecting to unknown or known people. It could be used to popularise its business, guiding people, etc.
  2. Social media networks have a history long back to the 1990s. Even though there were sites providing some of the features of SNs, complete SNs recognized were SixDegrees.com in 1997. It allowed users to create their profile and list their friends. Then later on in 1999 Livejournal, AsianAvenue and Blackplnet got launched. All the sites were focused on a limited population. Then in 2000 LunarStrom and MiGente started their service while SixDegree.com closed because they thought that it is too early to launch such a system. They assumed that people are not ready for this. Then later in 2001 two sites came into existence Cyworld and Ryze. 2002 was the year in which Fotolog, skyblog and a giant named Friendster started their service. Friendster become popular and reached about 300,000 users around the globe. But unfortunately, their database was incapable of handling this much of data and their company collapsed sooner or later. By the beginning of 2003 sites like Couchsurfing, LinkedIn, Tribe.net, Open Bc/Xing, MySpace, Last.FM, Hi5 came. And 2004 was a golden year for SNs where lot of global sites like, Orkut, Dogster, Flickr, Piczo, Mixi, Facebook (In Havard University only), Multiply, aSmallWorld, Dodgeball, Care2, Caster, Hyves got widespread attention. Later in 2005 and 2006 sites like Yahoo! 360, YouTube, Xanga, Cyworld, Bebo, Ning, AsianAvenue, Blackplanet, QQ, Facebook (for everyone), Windows Live Space, Cyworld, Twitter, MyChurch were lunched.
  3. From 2003 on words a new trend of social media sites came to existence. They were greatly influenced by the success of Friendster. More worldwide SNs got launched such as Orkut, Microsoft Live Space, Myspace, Facebook were some of those. Some sites like LinkedIn, Xing, etc focused on business. People started to use SNs for many more purposes other than just meeting people such as professional sites, passion centric sites which helped strangers connect based on shared interests, connects travelers to people with couches and connecting Christian church and their members. And also platforms focused on media sharing began implementing. Earlier SNs were lacking some of these features. They were unable to create a worldwide platform. Even though some of them like SixDegree and Friendster managed to go global, but they couldn’t keep a persistency due to lack of technological advancement. The well known Facebook was a regional site dedicated only to Harvard University students. Then, later on, it eventually spread to different schools, cooperates and finally to everyone.
