Please answer question 1a

1. The triodide ion ((I3)-) is used in conjunction with iodide (I-) as a hole transporter in dye-sensitized solar cells. Molecules on TiO2 nanoparticles, when excited by light, donate electrons to the nanoparticles that transfer to a transparent conducting substrate, leaving a hole (+) on the molecules. Iodides give electrons to neutralize the holes, and then travel to the opposite electrode as ((I3)-) where they take electrons (completing the circuit) to become I- again.

(a) Write a balanced chemical equation using ((I3)-), I- and e to show the half reaction at the electrode that turns ((I3)-) back to I-. Do the same for the reaction at the molecules with holes (+) on them. (4 points).

(b) ((I3)-) is a very rare example of a molecule for which on cannot draw a Lewis structure (it is a linear molecule). To show this, draw a Lewis dot structure for I2. Then explain why (I-I-I)- cannot satisfy the octet rule for the central I. (6 points)
