I think the time in class should be utilized to get a better understanding of the subject so that later you can use your study hours to deepen your understanding and grasp of the concepts. Even if you get a very basic understanding of the concepts during class, it would be easier to understand them completely later, compared to starting from scratch during your study hours.
Class assignments are given to give the student a complete view of the subject. Try to complete them on time so that when the teacher moves on to the next topic, you can connect to it better. If you miss a class, try and catch up with the help of your friends before the next class so that you feel comfortable with the new topic. Otherwise, you may feel like a link is missing and may not understand the new topic either.
