Software Engineering is a profession where professionals go through the learning of software engineering to learn about the software engineering techniques, languages, coding, testing, maintaining applications and much more about computer and software science. Thus, with aspects to degree and certification programs, professional associations there are some ethics that every software professional should adhere to. Software engineers are expected to be educated, honest, true and thus they are expected to exhibit the highest standards of honesty and integrity and thus being at the highest principles of ethical conduct. Ethics can be a way to look at relationships between the individual, his employer, clients, and the society in general. Thus ethics is very important for the entire stream of connection, as something unethical will affect all, and also the doer as well. Software engineers should deal with all the entities with honesty, impartiality, fairness, and equity and must have a role in the work towards public and social health and protecting it and also safety and welfare of all. Mistakes and unethical behaviors of the software engineers also cost money and lives and thus it is very important to have a code of ethics in software engineering to software engineers.
Thus there is always a relationship between ethics and the bottom line such as the software engineers - developers and testers. Before even stuff reaches the managers, they do the bottom level of work i.e. hand on the development of the application, thus it is very important to be ethical in the development and thus yes, there is surely a very strong relationship between ethics and the bottom line.
Yes from an organizational perspective this is completely true as the organization understands that who does the development thus it tries to maintain the ethics and make the developers and engineers understand about the ethical and non-ethical activities from time to time. From an individual perspective, yes also computer crimes take place because of unethical activities that are done by the software engineers on the application development. I have experience about one in my department when in a certain banking software a group of software developer and testers did an unethical task to skim money out of the millions of account with the bank when the money was transferred to the recipients. Skimming in a bank account is a theft of money when after the decimal the small amount of .02 or .04 is rounded off and the money gets transferred to the developer's account and thus they steal money. Now, multiply a million accounts with .04, it's quite a huge sum of money in dollars. Thus, this was one unethical activity which was found out and it was a criminal one to be true.
