Question

3. A 4 m-long canoe will hold 3 campers. A 40 kg camper sits 0.5 m from one end of the canoe and a 30 kg camper sits 1.5 m from the other end of the canoe. Where should another 30 kg camper sit so that the center of mass is at the middle of the canoe? Drawing a diagram may be helpful. A. 1.0 m from the end closer to the 40 kg camper B. in the middle of the canoe C. 0.5 m from the end closer to the other 30 kg camper D. 1.0 m from the end closer to the other 30 kg camper

Answer #1

3 . x_cm = (m1 v1 + m2 v2 + m3 v2) / (m1+ m2+m3)

we want center of mass at x = 4/2 = 2 m

putting values,

2 = [ (40 x 0.5) + (30 x (4 - 1.5)) + (30 x d)] / (40 + 30 + 30)

d = 3.5 m from end.

or 4-3.5 = 0.5 m from other end.
