In the zone of continental lithosphere layers are stretches by the rifting process. Zone presents in the continental lithosphere have some important geological features and sequences. If the rifting process is successfully completed in the zone of continental lithosphere, forms a new ocean basins. Rifting process can be caused when hot materials from mantle plume reaches the base of the continental plate and starts to the overlapping lithosphere to heat up. Some extensional forces are generated when upward movement of the plume against the base of the plate starts.
East-African Rift Valley can be the most modern example of a continental rift which is extended to the Red Sea in Northward direction and into the Indian Ocean in Eastward direction.
