Answer #1

Answer a)

Step 1: Here, first, find the time taken (in minutes) for processing a unit, for all the work stations as mentioned below:

Processing Time (In Minutes) = 60 Minutes / Units Processed in an Hour

Hence, processing time at workstation:

1) Sawing = 60 / 7 = 8.5714 Min / Unit (Rounded to 4 decimal places)

2) Sanding = 60 / 6 = 10 Min / Unit

3) Drilling = 60 / 2.5 = 24 Min / Unit

4) Welding = 60 / 2 = 30 Min / Unit

5) Assembly = 60 / (0.8 + 0.8 +0.8) = 60 / 2.4 = 25 Min / Unit

(Note Total processing time at assembly = 25 * 3 = 75 Min / Unit)

Step 2: Determine the Bottleneck in the process:

The bottleneck is the workstation which takes the longest processing time per unit. Hence, the bottleneck for the given process is workstation "Welding".

Answer b) As calculated in step 1 of answer a, bottleneck time is 30 Minutes Per Unit. = 30.00 Minutes per Unit (Rounded to 2 decimal places)

Answer c) We will find the throughput time of the overall system by applying the following formula:

Throughput time of the overall system = Maximum of Processing Time (Sawing-Sanding-Welding-Assembly or Drilling-Welding-Assembly)

= Maximum [(8.5714 + 10 + 30 + 75) or (24 + 30 + 75)] (Values are taken from the step 1 of answer a)

= Maximum (123.5714 Minutes or 129 Minutes)

= 129 Minutes (Rounded to 2 decimal places)

Answer #2

A production process at Kenneth Day Manufacturing is shown in Figure S7.9 . The drilling operation occurs separately from, and simultaneously with, sawing and sanding, which are independent and sequential operations. A product needs to go through only one of the three assembly operations (the operations are in parallel).

Consider the following production process for manufacturing biscuits. The first step of the process is mixing where all of the ingredients are combined in the correct proportion to form dough. In the next step of the process, the dough is formed into sheets and cut into pieces in preparation for baking. The cut dough is then baked into biscuits and subsequently must be cooled. The final step of the process is packaging the biscuits for the consumer. The following table...

The first, where the decks are made, is set up as a process cost environment -- all decks go through the same lamination process in their manufacture and are given the same sealant coating. After that, the decks are cut to three different sizes for the three different models of skateboards that are sold. Then, different wheels, bearings, trucks, and other components are added in the assembly area...
