Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) is an excellent indicator for evaluating if there is something wrong somewhere in the body.
It is an important enzyme for almost all cells, so there LDH in almost every cell in the body.
Inside every cell.
Only a little LDH is found in the blood.
However if something goes wrong in the body, like several cells
being damaged or a cancer messing up the production, increased
levels of LDH can be registered.
The LDH will get from inside the cells and end in the blood, and
can therefore be detected.
Unfortunately high levels of LDH can’t be used as a singular
diagnostic tool. Even though LDH levels often rise in the case of
meningitis, pneumonia and some cancers, it dosen’t prove they are
there.
It is more a tool for monitoring the treatment, or verifying which
cancer it is, by using several other blood test results.
