Answer #1

Question: Why does the sunflower possess the infertile ray flowers?

Answer: The sunflower has both disk and ray flowers. The disk flowers are found in the center of the flower heads and are fertile. These disk flowers will mature into sunflower seeds. The petals at the edge of the sunflower head are ray flowers. These flowers are infertile. They attract pollinators like bees to the flower head, the disk flowers do not attract insects.
