You discover a new drug that blocks the movement of all substances through the nuclear pores of the nucleus. Would your drug affect the copying of DNA into mRNA, translation of the mRNA into a protein, or both? Briefly explain your answer.

Conversion of DNA to mRNA (Transcription) occurs in the nucleus. After completion of transcription mRNA move to the cytoplasm through nuclear pores. In the cytoplasm translation of mRNA to protein occurs. As the drug blocks the movement of all substances through the nuclear pores, after completion of transcription mRNA will unable to move to the cytoplasm. As mRNA unable to move to the cytoplasm, translation of mRNA to protein will not occur. Transcription require RNA polymerase II enzyme which enter the nucleus before transcription takes place. As movement of all substances through the nuclear pores are blocked, RNA polymerase II unable to move into the nucleus & transcription of DNA into mRNA will not occur. Thus the drug will affect both transcription of DNA into mRNA & translation of mRNA to protein.
