There is a rural community with 8000 households. The community has a power plant that uses fossil fuel with a capacity of producing 20,000 megawatts (MW) and the average energy consumption per house of 10,000 kilowatts (kWh) throughout each year. With this scheme the residents pay 9 dolars per hour each kWh. Some investors have proposed to the community to look for alternative sources of energy, and for that they propose the installation of 10 wind turbines. Each of these turbines can produce 1.5 MW of electricity. The cost of each turbine is 35 million dollars and it can operate without problems and in a guaranteed way for 20 years.

a) How much energy can the turbines produce during the year?

b) How much energy could the turbines provide to each household throughout the year?

In some places wind turbines are a viable alternative to conventional sources of electricity. They vary in size according to the application, but one type has a maximum power rating of 2.00 MW. Wind turbines rarely run at full power. If this wind turbine runs, on average, at 25.6% of its maximum rate for one year, how much energy does the wind turbine generate? In one part of the country an average household consumes 8300 kW·h of electrical energy in...

A community of 2,500 homes is considering their options for generating electricity locally. The final three options under consideration are: A river which runs to the north of the community, which is suitable for the installation of a hydroelectric generation facility. A large flat-topped hill to the east of the community, which could be used for a wind farm. Open land to the south of the community, which could also be used for a wind farm. The residents of the...

The state of Iowa is among the top three states in U.S. in wind power generation. In 2016, over 20 billion kWh of electrical energy in Iowa was generated by wind power. Assuming that wind speed at the altitude of wind turbine is in average of 6 m/s, the efficiency of converting wind energy to the electricity is 80 %, and all wind turbines work constantly throughout the year. We can further assume that the air in Iowa has an...

1.There has been steady opposition to the deployment of wind turbines in many parts of rural Ontario. Use the Internet to find out about the arguments that are frequently made by local residents who are against the installation of wind turbines. Summarize those arguments (cite your sources). Given that, to date, no scientific study has linked wind turbines with health effects other than annoyance, how much weight would you give these arguments if you were in charge of the decision?...

A hydroelectric power plant has a dam 100 ft high, and water can flow through the dam and water turbines at 1 million lbm per minute over a 60-ft drop. If the turbines can convert the loss in potential energy of the water into electric power at an efficiency of 70%, how much power can the facility produce in megawatts? (Note: 550 ft ·lbf/s = 1 hp = 0.746 kW)
