A mother who is Rh+ is carrying the child from a man who is Rh-. Is it possible that she could carry a Rh-fetus? Is it possible her baby will be Rh+? In either event, should the mother receive Rhogam? My baby was born with Rh-HDN, what will the doctors do to my baby once its born? What type of blood is transfused and why should it be of the negative type?

Yes, it is possible that she carry a Rh- fetus and there are 50% chances that she carry a Rh+ fetus. If the fetus is Rh+ then there is need of Rhogam (anti- D immune globulin) is an injection given to pregnant woomen.

HDN occur when your baby's red blood cells break down at a fast rate. Firstly doctors check the blood flow in your baby with ultrasound. Then puts red blood cells into your baby's circulation. Negative blood group is transfused because the blood group of mother is negative and if the blood group of baby is also nagative then mother blood group does not produce antibodies against the baby's blood group.
