Political Behaviour a) Describe at least two political behaviours you have observed in school groups or your workplace. b) Were they successful? Why or why not?
(a) Political Behaviour is an informal and sometimes
behind-the-scenes effort to sell ideas, influence organizations,
increase power, or achieve other goals. Politics has been around
for thousands of years. Aristotle writes that politics comes from
different interests, and these competing interests must be
addressed in some way. Reasonable decisions can be ineffective when
interests do not match, so political attitudes and strategies of
influence emerge.
(i) Today, working in an organization requires skills in dealing
with conflict programs and changing the energy base. An effective
policy is not to win at any cost, but to keep in touch to achieve
results. Although often portrayed as negative, the organization’s
policies are not bad. Instead, it is important to be aware of the
potentially destructive aspects of organizational policies to
mitigate their negative impacts. In fact, people in organizations
can waste too much time on political attitudes. A study reported in
the journal HR found that managers waste 20% of their time
management policies. However, as John Kotrott writes in Power and
Influence, “Without conscience and political skills, we face the
inevitable vision of a bureaucratic struggle, a political struggle,
and a struggle for destructive power. Hence the organization's
initiative, innovation, integrity and efficiency. "
(ii) In our discussions of power, we find that problems with power
often revolve around scarce resources. Organizations usually have
limited resources that need to be allocated in some way.
Individuals and groups within an organization may disagree on how
these resources should be allocated so that they can seek out these
resources for themselves or their interest groups that lead to
organizational policies. Simply put, to the policies of the
organization, people unite with like-minded people in an attempt to
access scarce resources. They will engage in behaviors that are
commonly seen in government organizations, such as negotiation,
negotiation, alliance building, and conflict resolution.
They were successful because Politics is an integral part of
organizational life because organizations are formed based on
different interests that need to be aligned. In fact, 93 percent of
managers surveyed reported having a workplace policy within their
organization, and 70 percent believed that to be successful, one
had to get involved in politics. In a negative light, saying
someone is "political" usually creates a picture of a deal behind
the scenes, a ploy or a covert program for personal gain.
Individuals with this type of political attitude are said to engage
in self-serving behaviors that are not sanctioned by the
organization.
Examples of this self-service behavior include crossing the command
line to get approval for a particular project, going through the
wrong network to get a special service, or persuading a senior
manager before deciding to advertise. These types of activities
harm the organization within because not everyone is committed to
politics to achieve their goals. Those who follow proper procedures
often feel jealous and resentful because they understand that the
division of organizational resources includes injustice and
recognition.
Researchers have found that if employees feel that their
organization is strongly politically driven, they are less likely
to participate in the organization, work worse at work, have higher
levels of anxiety in the workplace, and have higher frequency more
than that of depressed mood.
Decreases in organizational policy are more likely to erupt when
there is organizational change or when there are difficult
decisions and lack of resources that create competition between
teams. To reduce excessive political attitudes, company leaders can
ensure equal access to information, common behavior patterns, and
demonstrate that politics is not rewarded or tolerated. In
addition, leaders should encourage managers throughout the
organization to give high feedback to employees on their
performance. High-level feedback reduces perceptions of
organizational policies and improves the morale of employees and
their work. Remember that politics can be a healthy way of doing
things in organizations.
