Maria Chen was working as an educational aide for a third grade class while taking a human relations course at night. She was especially intrigued by the chapter in her textbook on motivation, since she had quite a number of underachievers in her third grade class. She spent a couple of hours each day working with this small group of students. Working with them was frustrating, since nothing she did seemed to motivate them. Stacy sat like a stone all during their small group time. Jorge and Mike squirmed and giggled with each other while she worked with them. Ayako complained that everything was "Too hard!" Jamal just looked out the window, yawning in boredom. Recess was a different story; they each had different routine. Stacy always wanted to eat her lunch early, during morning recess. By lunchtime she was asking the other children for their throw-away food. Ayako clung to Maria's hand during the recess, pleading with her to stay with her. Jorge and Mike tried hard almost every day to get into the soccer game with a big group of kids, but usually to no avail. Jamal showed off his skills at baseball, calling out the whole time, "Ms. Chen! Ms. Chen! Look at me!" "This is so weird," thought Maria one day, "it's almost like that hierarchy of needs model. They all seem to want – well, that is, to need – something different. I wonder if Maslow could lead me to some motivational tools to use with these kids?" Is Maria right? Does it seem that Stacy, Ayako, Jorge, Mike, and Jamal are on different levels of Maslow's hierarchy of needs? On what level would you place each of them? How can Maria use this theory to motivate the children in their school work? Compare Maslow's needs model with McClelland's. Which of McClelland's needs seems to be important for each child?

answer-

yes Maira was right that mashlow's theory will help her to find these children's motivational level needs.Mashlow gave theory of need motivation presented in the form of pyramid structure. The structure state the five levels or  hierarchy of needs. This framework state that people are motivated when they completed one stage of need then move to another level. The five levels of needs are- Pyschological needs, safety needs, belonginess need, esteem need and self actualization need.

Stacy is at Psychological need which is related to need for food, water, shelter, clothes etc. Stacy wanted to eat food early and want left over food of other students during recess.

I would motivate stacy to eat with me during lunch break so that she would have the food as well i will motivate her to perform better in class.

Akyo is at security need because he wanted maria to be with him during lunch break because he afraid that someone may bully him.I would motivate Akyo to be brave and learn to be self dependent. I will tell Akyo to go alone for few minutes and see that school is safe for him. if anyone will bother him then i will punish him.

Jorge and Mike are at belongingeness level where they wanted to belong to a sports team of big group of kids.I will motivate jorge and mike to create thier own sports team so that others students will join them. i will play with them.

Jamal is at esteem level where he wants recognition from ms chen by showing his skills at baseball.I will motivate him by recommend him to ms chen personally.

Mashlow's needs are five needs while mcclland's needs are three which are the needs for achievement, affiliation, or power.

Akyo need of power to feel safe and secure. Jorge and mike need affiliation from big group of students. Jamal need achievement in baseball game. Need of stacy does not fit in in this theory.
