Answer #1

a) The pain can be modulated to not travel through the central nervous system through the mechanism of gate control theory. Though gate control theory mechanism, non painful input blocks the gate for painful inputs and hence prevent the pain from travelling to the CNS. When large sensory cutaneous inputs are given then it activates inhibitory interneurons that suppresses pain by blocking the gate to noxious input.

b) The first experiment was done by William M Jenkins and Team to study behaviorally controlled tactile stimulation and the second experiment was done by Michael M. Merzenich to study cortical map changes in owl monkey.

The following understanding was devised – the skin surfaces stimulation represented over expanded cortical surfaces and with magnification increase, skin surface were seen behaving as finer grains to prevent dynamically receptive fields.
