In DNA replication,DNA polymerase links DNA nucleotide together. This enzyme requires RNA primer to be laid down on the parental strand by DNA primase. And the parental DNA strand to be separated and unwound by DNA helicase. The fragments of DNA created to be linked together by DNA ligase.

DNA replication

DNA Replication is the biological process that occurs in cells of every living organism. In this process the parent DNA molecule is copied into two new daughter DNA which are exactly same as their parent DNA. it is the vital process which is is responsible for the inheritance of genetic material.

this process of replication takes place in the nucleus and carried out by many enzymes ,

  • DNA polymerase. It polymerizes the nucleotides to form DNA molecule by adding new deoxyribonucleotides . so the main function of DNA polymerase is to synthesis the DNA .
  • DNA primase.  Dna primase is required for the initiation of synthesis of DNA because the enzyme DNA polymerase is not able to initiate the synthesis of new strand, as it can only extend the strand which is formed by the primase from 3' end by joining further new ribonucleotides. Dna primase copies the template strand and synthesis a short RNA primer in 5' to 3' which is complementary to the template strand. followed by DNA polymerase that extends the newly synthesised strand.
  • DNA helicase. DNA helicase is the enzyme involved in the process of replication that helps in unwind of the double helix of DNA by breaking the hydrogen bonds between them. Unwinding of helix is an essential process that enables other process to occur in replication.
  • DNA ligase. It is the enzyme that joins the fragments of DNA formed in replication. Two new strands are synthesized in the process of replication one is leading strand and another is lagging strand. leading strand is synthesized continuously and the lagging strand is synthesized discontinuously as short fragments which are linked together by enzyme ligase.
