Answer #1

1. The renal corpuscle is composed of two parts (1) GLOMERULUS and (2) BOWMAN'S CAPSULE

Describe glomerulus. -Glomerulus is defined as the tuft of capillaries which consists of endothelial cells.

Describe the glomerular capsule.- Bowman's capsule is a cup like sac which is the initial dilated part of the nephron involved in filtration of blood.

The visceral layer is made of modified epithelial cells called PODOCYTES whose special extension called foot proceses or pedicels surround the glomerular capillaries to form filtration slits. The BOWMAN'S space is the hollow region between the parietal and visceral layers that is continuous with the entrance of the renal tubule lumen. Podocytes and fenestrated glomerular capillaries form a complex membrane that RETAIN blood flowing through the glomerulus. Filtered fluid known as GLOMERULAR FILTRATE exits the glomerular capillaries into the capsular space and then enters the lumen of the renal tubule.

2. Newly formed filtrate enters the RENAL TUBULE where it can be further modified in three structurally and functionally distinct regions; the PROXIMAL CONVOLUTED tubule, the LOOP OF HENLE and the DISTAL CONVOLUTED tubule.

3. The proximal tubule, the first and the longest segment of the renal tubule, has both straight and coiled or convoluted sections. The proximal tubule is made of simple CUBOIDAL epithelial cells with prominent microvilli.

Whats function the microvilli serve? It increases the luminal surface area for increased reabsorption at proximal convoluted tubules.

.

Kidneys receive approximately 20-25% of total cardiac output and help to maintain the blood pH by regulating excretion of different ions.

Cortex is the outer part of the kidney.

Medulla is a pale colored inner part of the kidney containing 10-15 pyramids. Pyramids terminate medially in the renal papillae. Papillae project into calcyes.

Renal tubules include 4 parts namely proximal convoluted tubules, loop of henle, distal convoluted tubules and collecting tubules.
