Hormones are chemical messengers that can relay messages to only those cells that display specific receptors for that particular hormone,thereby responding to the signal.The different effect of same hormones on different organs is possible due to the ability of the cells to display receptors specific to many different hormones at once.

Hormones function by mediating changes in the target cells by binding to the specific hormone receptors.Since the hormones circulate through the body,it comes into contact with many different cell types,but it will affect only the cells that contains the necessary receptors.A receptor for a specif hormone can be found on any different cells or on a small number of specialized cells.For example: TSH hormone which stimulates the metabolic activity throughout the body,have different effect on different tissue types it comes into contact with.A cell can not only have many receptors for the same hormone,but it can also posses receptors for different types of hormones.A cells sensitivity to a particular hormone and the cellular response it results,depends upon the number of receptors that responds to that hormone.A cells sensitivity to hormone can increase or decrease due to the change in number of receptors that responds to the hormone over time.
