Answer #1

The correct option is A) Birds having one - way flow of air as it moves through the lungs.

The air sacs of birds allow a unidirectional flow of air through their lungs. As a result, air coming into a bird's lungs is not mixed with air that has already been in the lungs with less oxygen. So, in bird lungs, concentration of oxygen is high which is available to diffuse into the blood. The rate of diffusion of a gas is directly proportional to concentration gradient. The greater the gradient, the faster the rate of diffusion.

The other three options are examples for evolutionary strategies for maximizing gas diffusion. Having a large surface area increases the amount of gas that can diffuse through them.

    1. Which of the following statements is FALSE? Homeotherms can sustain a high level of physical activity for long periods. Homeotherms require a very low amount of glucose for daily activities. Homeotherms can generate energy rapidly when the situation demands. Homeothermy allows organisms to function at a higher level in cold environments. Homeotherms have relatively higher metabolic rates than similar-sized poikilotherms. 2.
