Following are the primary traits used in negotiation:

  1. Knowledge - The individual conducting the negotiation must have an indepth knowledge about the topic being discussed and negotiated upon.
  2. Patience - He/she must have the patience and endurance to listen to other party/parties and provide them equal opportunity to present their side.
  3. Interpersonal skills - This includes communication skills, listening skills, decision making skills ,problem solving skills, relationship building skills and so on.
  4. Analyrical skills - The negotiator must be able to analyse the situation and information properly in order to arrive at an agreeable solution.
  5. Willingness to negotiate - The individual must be forthcoming to conclude the negotiation and arrive at a win-win situation.
  6. Assertiveness - The individual must have the power to convince others and influence through presentation of your point-of-view.
