The five important steps of negotiation process are :

1) Preparation and planning :

Before starting a negotiation process it is important to be aware about the terms and interests for which an individual is negotiating. It is essential to be aware about the people involved, their perspectives and interests and their perception. This will ensure the individual to prepare accordingly for presenting arguments and matching the interests.

.

2) Ground Rules:

The another most important stage is knowing about the ground rules or basic terms of negotiation so that interaction align with these ground rules. These rules will include the specifications of negotiation for example the duration, issues, demands of each party, interests and expectations from the project, limits etc.

.

3) Clarification :

It will be the detailed explanation of the demands and expectations set by each party involved in the negotiation. Clarification will involve discussion broadly the priorities, intend, critical factors which are essential in the project or contract for each party. This stage also involves educating and informing each other about the requisite measures which should be taken on each side for fulfilling demands.

.

4) Bargaining and Addressing Issues :

This is the fourth step involved in negotiation process which involves discussion terms, convincing each other to agree on ones terms, motivating the opposite party for implementing recommended suggestions and measures. Here issues are addressed to make deal go smoothly and each part tries to maximize one's own interest through talking and bargaining.

.

5) Closure and Implementation :

This is the final phase where negotiation process ends with a signing of agreement based on terms discussed already. This is a crucially step because here the whole negotiation terms and conditions are implemented carefully so that the interests of both parties are taken into consideration while conducting the deal. It involves developing procedures regarding how the deal or contact will be carried out.

.

.

If any one if the above mentioned five important phases or stages is missed or skipped the negotiation process can prove to be ineffective and unsuccessful. This is because each step mentioned above has a great importance for the whole negotiation process and each ensures that deal is finally conducted with all the terms properly discussed and agreed upon. The most critical factor that makes negotiation successful is the mutual agreement and hence it is very essential that each step is carried so that this mutual agreement is achieved for making negotiation successful. Moreover each step such as preparation , discussion, analysis, clarification each has its own significance for carrying out the negotiation effectively as each step contributes to the final process.
