urkitt Lymphoma (BL) is a rare form of cancer our immune system’s B-cells. There are different forms of this cancer, with the main form being found predominantly in Africa and affecting children.

The gene c-MYC is a transcription factor that drives the cell cycle into S-phase (its activated by E2F). cMYC is found to be overexpressed in BL patients.

A) c-MYC in BL patients acts as a(n) ________. (type either oncogene or tumor suppressor gene)

B) Would this mutation have to be on one or both of the alleles? (just type one or both, no explanation is needed)

Answer #1

Oncogenes promote cell proliferation.
Tumor suppressor genes inhibit cell proliferation.

c-MYC promotes progression to the S-phase i.e. it promotes cell proliferation.
In BL patients, It acts as an ONCOGENE

Oncogenes act in a dominant manner.
So, a single copy of the mutant allele is sufficient to cause the phenotype (Tumor formation)
