All the taxa in the family Orchidaceae are angiosperms, having petals, sepals, reproductive parts and producing seeds which are enclosed in the ovary. Orchids have three sepals, two petals and a third specialized petal called the labellum, which all vary greatly in shape and coloration from species to species. Unlike most flowering plant species, both the stamens and pistil are combined in orchids to form what is known as the column.
