Answer #1

Ethanol inhibition of a cytochrome P450 system

P450 2E1 is involved in the bioactivation and detoxication of a number of chemical carcinogens, and ethanol is an inhibitor of P450 2E1.  barbiturates interact with various CYPs and inhibit the biotransformation of other CYP substrates; likewise, other substrates (e.g., other drugs or endogenous substrates) can inhibit the barbiturate metabolism. Phenobarbital is a cytochrome P450 inducer.

MEOS oxidizes ethanol to acetaldehyde. The MEOS (microsomal ethanol oxidizing system) is an accessory pathway in the liver which increases in activity on chronic alcohol induction. The MEOS utilizes a cytochrome P450 which has since been deciphered to be CYP2E1, an ethanol-inducible form of P450.
