Individuals with a genetic defect in the ETC/oxidative phosphorylation are found to have relatively high concentrations of alanine in their blood. Provide a reason for this in biochemical terms. Explain in detail by referencing pathways affected and intermediates that may be causing this effect.
Because the ETC is not functional, the Krebs cycle intermediates which is malate will be converted into pyruvate and also the glycolysis will be ended in pyruvate and won't enter the Krebs cycle as the metabolites such as NADH and FADH produced in the Krebs cycle can't be utilized by the ETC. This is the reason why the pyruvate will be directed to producing more of alanine by the enzyme alanine transaminase and this is the reason why there is more of blood alanine.

Can I get some help with question 1. a and b please?
Uncouplers of oxidative phosphorylation in mitochondria inhibit the coupling between the electron transport and phosphorylation reactions and thus inhibit ATP synthesis without affecting the respiratory chain and ATP synthase (H(+)-ATPase). Miscellaneous compounds are known to be uncouplers, but weakly acidic uncouplers are representative because they show very potent activities. The most potent uncouplers discovered so far are the hindered phenol SF 6847, and hydrophobic salicylanilide S-13, whic are...
9. Oxidative phosphorylation involves the ATP synthase enzyme being "turned on" by to make ATP a) phosphate being transferred directly to ADP from a substrate b) protons being stripped from water c) electrons passed along cytochromes d) protons moving from one side of the membrane to the other e) protons being passed along cytochromes 10. When the body depletes its supply of oxygen through aerobic respiration, lactic acid fermentation may occur to provide energy. As a byproduct, lactic acid (serum...
2. A dominant allele H reduces the number of body bristles that Drosophila flies have, giving rise to a “hairless” phenotype. In the homozygous condition, H is lethal. An independently assorting dominant allele S has no effect on bristle number except in the presence of H, in which case a single dose of S suppresses the hairless phenotype, thus restoring the "hairy" phenotype. However, S also is lethal in the homozygous (S/S) condition. What ratio of hairy to hairless flies...
1. According to the paper, what does lactate dehydrogenase
(LDH) do and what does it allow to happen within the myofiber? (5

2. According to the paper, what is the major disadvantage of
relying on glycolysis during high-intensity exercise? (5

3. Using Figure 1 in the paper, briefly describe the different
sources of ATP production at 50% versus 90% AND explain whether you
believe this depiction of ATP production applies to a Type IIX

THE WAR ON ALLERGIES SUPPOSE THAT 54.3 PERCENT of your country's population had cancer. That figure might set off a nationwide panic-a search for something wrong with people's diet, the environment, activity levels. In fact, that's the percentage of Americans who show a positive skin response to one or more allergens. A1 5 B The manifestations' of allergy-sneezing, itching, rashes-are signs of an une system running amok,2 attacking foreign invaders-allergens- that mean no harm. Allergens include pollen, dust mites, mold,...

Risk management in Information Security today Everyday information security professionals are bombarded with marketing messages around risk and threat management, fostering an environment in which objectives seem clear: manage risk, manage threat, stop attacks, identify attackers. These objectives aren't wrong, but they are fundamentally misleading. In this session we'll examine the state of the information security industry in order to understand how the current climate fails to address the true needs of the business. We'll use those lessons as a foundation...
