Answer #1

Question 1

a.) Answer: The lipid in the figure "a" is a triacylglycerol (TAG). It is made of glycerol backbone to which three fatty acids are attached (TAG-18:1/18:0/18:3). Fatty acid attached at sn-1 position is oleic acid (18:1=18 carbons with one double bond). Fatty acid attached at sn-2 position is stearic acid (18:0) and fatty acid attached at sn-3 position is linolenic acid (18:3).

Name of the lipid = 1-stearyl-2-oleoyl-3-linolenoyl-glycerol (Triacylglycerol).

b.)The lipid in the figure "b" is phosphatidylserine. It is made up of phosphoglyceroyl backbone to which two fatty acids and amino acid serine is attached. Fatty acid attached to sn-1 position is palmitic acid (16:0) and fatty acid at sn-2 position is eicosatetraenoic acid (20:4). Serine is attached to phospho group at sn-3 position of the glycerol.

Name of the lipid: 1-palmitoyl-2- eicosatetraenoyl-sn-glycerol-3-phospho-L-serine (phosphatidylserine).
