Answer #1

Answer:

7.

a. Since the woman is homozygous recessive for both the traits, her phenotype would probably be blond with blue eyes. So her genotype would be ddbb .

b. Since the eyes of the man were blue, he must be a homozygous recessive for that (bb). His hair is dark which means he can either be a homozygous dominant or heterozygous. Since his mother is a homozygous recessive, one inheritance from her would make him a heterozygous (Dd). So the man's genotype is Ddbb.

c.punnet square

gametes db db db db
Db Ddbb Ddbb Ddbb Ddbb
Db Ddbb Ddbb Ddbb Ddbb
db ddbb ddbb ddbb ddbb
db ddbb ddbb ddbb ddbb

So the man will produce two types of gametes Db and db whereas the woman can produce only one type of gamete which is db.

(d) From the above punnet square we can conclude that there will be equal number of children of both the genotype as well as phenotype. Hence Blue, blond (bbdd): blue, black(bbDd) = 8:8= 1:1

(e) The phenotypic ratio of the children would be similar to genotypic ratio which is 1(blue eyes and black hair):1(blue eyes with blond hair)

Uption 4. The inheritance of hair and eye color is very complicated. Scientists have found approximately 10-20 genes responsible for determining hair and eye color in humans (sheesh - I thought a dihybrid cross with 2 genes was bad...). Although many genes are involved in producing these phenotypes, it does seem that just a few genes play a major role in determining the color of our hair and eyes. The following is a simplified, but still somewhat realistic view of...
