3 GIRLFRIENDS DREAM

Daniya, Ardini and Nazhan were childhoods friends who had always talk about starting up
a business together after graduated from university. Daniya had the financial background
and startup capital to contribute. While Ardini and Nazhan had the technical knowledge
they believe would give them the competitive advantage needed to become and industry
leader.
During their early university’s year, Ardini and Nazhan develop a new and innovative way
to manufacture computer components. When they shared their idea with Daniya, she was
able to draw up a detailed business plan to present for potential investor when the three
were ready to launch their venture. They had been very careful not to disclose anything
about their innovative idea to other colleagues or any of their friends and were anxious to
get started.
After selecting the company names “GF Vision Compuland”, the three of them come to
you for advice on intellectual property rights.

a) To protect their innovative process of manufacturing computer components from
unauthorized use, which type of intellectual property should the three friends apply for?
Identify the agency they should apply and outline the steps involved in the process.

b) Should they consider protecting intellectual property or registering their company
name? Which intellectual property would cover this concern? Could they use the name
without registering it?

a. To protect their innovative process of manufacturing computer components from
unauthorized use, they should apply for parenting their manufacturing process. The agency that they should apply for is the World Intellectual Property orgabnization.

The steps involved in patenting includes: a opinion of patentability, preparing and filing for the application of patent, patent application is prosecuted. This is followed by the appeal, abandonment, and issuance of patent application and maintenance fees.

b. Protecting the intellectual property is the what they should consider. The intellectual property that would cover this concern is patenting the manufacturing process. Yes, they can use the name without registering. However, registering the name of the company will give them the sole authority to use the name.
