The privacy act of 1974 can be considered to be the guiding principle, values which by law represent adherence to fairness when it comes to collection, use, maintenance as well as spreading or utilization of the information of any individual by the medium of information technology as well as the records maintained in the system of the different federal agencies. It is a federal law which pertains to the information which can be considered to be personally identifiable. This protects the interests of the individual due to the fact that no information can be disclosed without the written consent of the subject individual. It also allows the owner of the information to check if the information has been disclosed.
