What is an ethics training program? How would one be developed and implemented?
The main purpose that a company would introduce an ethics training program is to educate and enable the employees with the consideration of ethical conduct, to form the basis of their future conduct and for them to understand what values the company holds at the core of its business practices. It can be used to build upon the values that individuals already possess and provide them with the understanding and implications of their actions with a larger more focused context.
In order to create a strong and competent ethics program, a company can essentially make use of the following guidelines:
1. Analyze the values the organization currently exhibits, it
can be done with the use of audits or internally by the management,
since they would already have the necessary data if the company
maintains the records.
2. Establish the vision that needs to be achieved and organize the
values around these values.
3. Engage with the board of the company in order to gain a better
perspective. It is the board’s main role to hire new managers and
keep the organization on point.
4. Use the code of conduct already set up in the company and build
from there. If the company has not yet established one, this can be
used to develop these values, linking them to the company’s mission
and vision and values which are generally considered ethical.
5. Develop the program with the employees in mind.
6. Implement the program at all possible levels in the
organization. This does mean upper management as well.
