Question

Two electric dipoles with charges+Q, where Q = 3.5 mC, are arranged as shown in the Figure. The charges +Q on the left are attached to each other by a rigid rod, and the two charges on the right are also rigidly attached to each other. Find the magnitude of the electric force between the two dipoles.

Answer #1

The total force is F = Σ kQq / d² (There will be no net vertical force)
In horizontal direction,
F = (2*k*Q²)*([1/(7.5m)²] - [cosΘ/((7.5m)² + (1.5m)²])
where cosΘ = cos[arctan(1.5m / 7.5m)] = cos[11.3º] = 0.98, k = 8.99*10^9 N·m²/C² and Q = 3.5*10^-3 C

=> F = 213.4N
