Answer #1

The theory of self actualization was developed by Abraham Maslow(1954). He consistently argued that needs are arranged in a hierarchical order. As one general type of need is satisfied, other higher order need will emerge and become operative in life. Thus he developed a hierarchical order of needs-

  • Physiological needs - Physiological needs are the physical requirements for human survival. For example, food, air, water, sleep, sex etc.According to Maslow, if these needs are deprived for a long time, the other needs will fail to appear. For an industrial set up, employees may not overtime because of their physiological needs.Water and tiffen break is also provided in an organizational setup.
  • Safety needs - When the physiological needs are successfully fulfilled then safety needs occur.Safety needs include personal, financial, good health protection. For an industrial setup, it may be the safe working condition.
  • Social needs - It emphasize the needs for love and belongingness.Team work can be the best example for an organizational setup.
  • Esteem need -Esteem needs are for a higher position within a group and act to foster pride in their work and in themselves as individuals.Employees thus compete with their own skill for achievement.
  • Self actualization - This need is the highest need.It means to fulfil one's individual nature in all its aspect. In this stage an employee enjoy his job.Now he is never distracted by any other needs.
