ans.Tri iodo thyronin(T3)and tetra iodo thyronin(T4) are referred to as the thyroid hormones. They are synthesized by follicular cells of the thyroid gland from iodine.Deficiency of iodine arrests production of the thyroid hormones leading to hypothyroidism. T3 is produced in lesser amounts than T4 and it's functionally more diverse than T4. Once inside its target cell, T4 is converted to the more active T3. T3 and T4 can act on nearly any cell of the body, . They are necessary for normal growth and development in children. Their main role is to regulate body’s metabolic rate. T3 and T4 also regulate the breakdown of carbohydrates, fats and protein. They influence the rate of protein synthesis in cells vis-a-vis co-opeartes with growth hormone to develop growth of bones in children and adolescents. They also regulate the body cells response to adrenaline.
