Asexual reproduction is rapid and produces a large number of progeny. It occurs under favorable conditions. It requires only one parent. It does not provide genetic variation. So, the harsh conditions may eliminate the entire population if it cannot tolerate the environment.

Sexual reproduction is slow and produces a small number of progeny. It occurs under unfavorable conditions. It requires two parents. It does provide genetic variation. In sexually reproducing organisms, there is genetic variation. So, at least a few individuals will survive the harsh conditions and maintain the species.

Sexual reproduction produces spores. These spores are resistant to harsh environmental conditions. So, the spores can survive the harsh conditions and germinate once favorable conditions arrive.
