HNO3 is a strong acid and a strong oxidizing agent.

Hence action of HNO3 with brass containing Cu(s) and Zn(s) will oxidize to Cu2+ and Zn2+ which ultemately gives corresponding salts Cupric nitrate Cu(NO3)2 and Zinc nitrate Zn(NO3)2 along with elimination of H2 gas.

Chemical reactions involved,

Cu (s) + 2 HNO3 --------> Cu(NO3)2 + H2 (g) and

Zn (s) + 2 HNO3 --------> Zn(NO3)2 + H2 (g)
