In a covalent bond two atoms share two electrons, where each atom contribute one electron to form the covalent bond.The covalent bond is formed so that the atoms involved acquire the Noble gas electron configuration or the octet configuration.A nitrogen atom has electronic configuration as 1S2 2S2 2P3 ,the valence shell is 3e- defficient to attain octet configuration ( 8 electrons in the valence shell). So nitrogen atom forms three covalent bond with another nitrogen atom that is a diatomic molecule is formed.The valence electrons that do not participate in bonding are called unshared electron.The atom which require two electrons to fulfill its octet form a double bond,so oxygen molecule is joined by a double bond.The atom which require single electron to fulfill octet form a single bond.
