Base excision repair (BER)

The base excision repair (BER) is a method which is used by the cell to correct damaged DNA bases or single-strand DNA breaks. In this method of DNA repair, damaged bases are removed by an enzyme called DNA glycosylase which cleaves the bond between nucleotide's sugar and its attached base. The resulting apurinic/apyrimidinic (AP) sites are processed first by the Ape1 AP endonuclease, leaving a 5′ deoxyribose-phosphate; then by an AP lyase activity leaving a 3′-elimination product. The resulting single-strand breaks are then filled in by DNA polymerase followed by ligation.
