Fitness here represents reproductive fitness.

For an organism to be fit, it should have maximum reproductive capacity and should have the able to survive in extremes of environment.

Therefore it is better for an organism to produce more offspring over the course of their life time in order to be fit.

This concept of reproductive fitness was given by darwin.

This fitness ensures the ability of an organism to survive and produce more offspring.
