Answer #1

Answer 3.

To separate the mixture in to its components, pKa has an important role. If one component is acidic (lower pKa), we need to add basic solution (e.g. NaOH) to make it soluble by increasing its polarity while other components remain insoluble. We can separate this acidic component by separating funnel using ether as a solvent in which insoluble component will go in Etheral layer and acidic component will go in basic aqueous layer. The water layer further can be neutralize futher by acid to make acidic component insoluble in aqueous solution and can be easily separated out. Similarly, basic component can be seperated out by using acid solution.

Answer 4.

Change in pH values will cause ethyl 4-amino-benzoate to be polar or non-polar due to protonation or deprotonation of -NH2 group. When we add a strong acid like HCl (lower the pH), we protonate amine group of ethyl 4-amino-benzoate and it become polar as it has positive charge on nitrogen. By adding strong base like NaOH, we deprotonate amine group that make it non-polar.

You will apply what you have learned earlier in the semester when performing the Acid-Base Extraction experiment to perform a different separation: that of an organic neutral compound and organic base. You will also need to purify and characterize these compounds. You will have one lab period to execute your plan for separating the assigned mixture given below. There will be a 1:1 (by mass) mixture placed in the lab: 1,4-dichlorobenzene/ethyl 4-aminobenzoate. You will take approximately 1 g of your...

So I have a question regarding my first advanced physics Lab. I missed the first day so I need quite a bit of guidance. We had to measure the density of materials, in this case a cylindrical rod, and we were given a cylindrical rod, string, balance and meter stick. Note that one side of our rod was cut and one side was round (shown in the pic below). Below is the calculations we did and the results we got...

I need help calculating total percent recovery. I have to get the percent recovery for the two compounds I separated during an organic base and neutral compound extraction experiment. The lab started with 0.6 g of a 1:1 mixture (by mass) of 1,4-dichlorobenzene/ethyl 4-aminobenzoate. My two compounds are 1) 1,4-dichlorobenzene in 95% ethanol and 2) ethyl 4-aminobenzoate in hot 95% ethanol. These are my results: 1,4-dichlorobenzene recovered 0.329 g ethyl 4-aminobenzoate recovered 0.271 g Please show all work on how...

The Separation of Three Organic Compounds by Acid, Base Reactions and Liquid, Liquid Extraction. Okay, so we had solid benzoic acid, ethyl 4- aminobenzoate, and 9-fluorenone all dissolved in diethyl ether. We separated the basic component by adding 3M HCl, we separated the acidic component by adding 3M NaOH. I don't understand what happens here. To isolate the acidic solution, we added 6 M NaOH and used the vacuum to recover the solid. To isolate the basic solution we added...
