unknown solid organic chemistry 2 experiment, please help in determining my solid

Here's my data so far, I'll be continuing next week:

-Melting point of the unknown is 209-215 degrees C

-Solid unknown itself is a white crushed powder with a strong smell

-Insoluble in 5% NaOH, Water, 5% HCl but soluble in H2SO4 and 95% ethanol

-Negative DNPH test with no precipitate

-Positive chromic acid test with a green precipitate

So i'm thinking i received a borneol compound. How should i proceed? or am i right or wrong?

Answer #1

Since this insoluble in water,5% NaOH and 5% HCl, this will have functional group of Alkene,Aldehyde,Ketone or Alcohol.

This is showing negative DNPH test, that means this can't be any kind of aldehyde or ketone.

Again this is giving positive chromic aid test,it indicates the presence of aldehyde or alcohol goup. From these two tests, we can conclude that this compund is having alcohol goup. This compond an't be phenolic types, since it is insouble in 5% NaOH.

Again the m.p. is in the range of 209-215 0C, this compund will be borneol type of compound, since it is white in colour and having a strong odor like camphor.

I need help with my chem lab report. I need to identify the unknown structure. Please help me identify the importance of each peak in the spectrums. What would the reactions look like for this structure when it reacts with ethanol for DNPH test, CrO3 and dioxane and NaOH for iodoform test. The compound was a clear liquid. It is insoluble in water. tests positive for DNPH test, positive for CrO3 test and negative for iodoform. These results tell me...

Organic Chemistry Lab question In the experiment we did acid-base extractions to find impurities. The impurity was either benzoic acid (acid) or 4-chloroaniline (base) So in this experiment we did Acid-Base extraction with an unknown compound. So we had an unknown of 0.150 grams and mixed it with 20 mL of diethyl ether. We placed this in a separatory funnel and added 2mL of 1.0 NaOH solution to the separatory funnel and placed the stopper over the top of the...

please answer all parts I am trying to check my answers. Recrystallization of Acetanilide Recrystallization is an important method used by chemists to purify solid compounds. When a chemist conducts a chemical reaction as shown in Scheme 1, it will rarely go to 100% completion, and will frequently produce byproducts. These byproducts and some of the unreacted starting materials will be present in the end as impurities. Chemists need ways to remove these unwanted impurities so they can isolate their...
