Silver nitrate is an expensive reagent. Why can’t we use ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3) instead of AgNO3 for the quantitative precipitation of AgCl ?
Silver nitrate is used for the determination of chloride ion concentration present in the sample. In this titration, the amount of Chloride present is estimated by the formation of AgCl ( precipitate). This is known as Argentometry.
Ag+ (aq) + Cl- (aq) -------> AgCl (s)
By using ammonium nitrate, the precipitate can not be formed.
The procuct formed if we use ammonium nitrate is Ammonium chloride which is soluble in water
Thats why we should not use Ammonium nitrate for the precipitation titrations.

We use AgNO3 (aq) gravimetric titration to determine a seawater sample containing Cl- and I-. If the titration graph only shows a single plateau, then we can only determine the total salinity of this sample, not the Cl- and I-content separately. ________ (2) Using gravimetry to quantify silver content based on insoluble AgX (X=Cl, Br, or I), we prefer AgI chemically. ___ (3) The analyte is usually placed in the Erlenmeyer flask, which is called a direct titration. By swapping...
