Answer #1

We are given following table for number of driving fatalities by male and female drivers .

Age Male Female Total
Under 16 179 129 308
16 - 20 5662 2065 7727
21 - 34 12676 4647 17323
35 - 54 13185 5091 18276
55 - 69 4502 2485 6987
70 and over 2988 1831 4819
Total 39192 16248 55440

We use theorem of conditional probability to compute the required probabilities which states that :

P( AB) P(AB) = ? P(B)

( a ) Probability that randomly selected driver who was male was 35 to 54 years old

P(35 to 54|Male) = P(35 to 54 n Male) P(Male)

13185/55440 13185 3919275544039192 = 0.3364

( b )  Probability that randomly selected driver who was 35 to 54 years old was male

P(Male35 to 54) = P(Malen 35 to 54) P(35 to 54)

13185/55440 13185 = 0.721 18276755440_18276

( c ) The victim of the fatal accident aged 35 to 54 is more likely to be male because the probability is greater than 0.5 i.e, . 0.721 > 0.5

  • P(Male 35 to 54) = 0.721
  • P(Female 35 to 54) = 1-0.721 = 0.279

So , Option ( C ) is correct
