Ans. Insulin composed of two chains held together by disulfide bonds. Insulin is synthesized in beta cells in the pancreas. The insulin mRNA's translation takes place and forms a single chain precursor called preproinsulin and when it enters the endoplasmic reticulum, its signal peptide is removed which generates proinsulin.

There are three domains of proinsulin- an amino terminal B-chain, a carboxy-terminal A chain and a C peptide in the middle which connects the other two chains. In ER, endopeptidases are present which excise the C peptide which generates the insulin. Insulin and free C peptide are packaged in the golgi in form of secretory granules and gets accumulated in the cytoplasm.
