Function of commutator switch in DC motor
A DC motor is a a electromechanical rotating machine which converts electrical energy into mechanical energy. We know that DC motor producers torque when two magnetic field interacts. One magnetic fields is generated by the current carrying stator winding and the other by current carrying armature winding. Now since the armature winding is placed on rotor therefore in order to supply DC current to the armature winding the machine is provided with commutator.
In simple words the commutator functions as the converter and feeds DC current to the rotor winding by converting it from the AC current which is useful in generating the required magnetic field for torque production.

I have a project where I am to build a DC motor with a commutator and brushes out of simple materials, such as scrap wood, magnet copper wire, permanent magnets and a 9V battery. I have already assembled the motor. When I connect the 9V battery, the coils do have a magnetic field as they will attract a paperclip, but the armature won't turn. If I give it a push, they become attracted to the permanent magnets on each side...
