How many of the following molecules would be required to build a 12-carbon fatty acid:

Answer: The Lauric acid is a 12 carbon fatty acid and to synthesize lauric acid 6 acetyl CoA units, 5 molecule of ATP and 10 molecules of NADPH and 5 bicarbonate are required.

Explanation behind the 5 bicarbonate ion is that out of 6 acetyl CoA unit only one unit is used to form the two carbon atom farthest from the acid end whereas the other 5 units of acetyl CoA is being converted into Malonyl CoA., which is the product of carboxylation reaction and the first step of fatty acid synthesis. The Malonyl CoA is formed from the bicarbonate and acetyl CoA.
