Answer #1

FIRST LET ME EXPLAIN YOU WHAT IS CONCURRENT ENGINEERING AND THEN I WILL GIVE YOU AN EXAMPLE FOR THIS.

CONCURRENT ENGINEERING = Concurrent engineering is a method of designing and developing products, in which the different stages run simultaneously, rather than consecutively.it is also called simultaneous engineering. It decreases lead time for developing the product.

as a mechanical engineer i am giving you the example of making of automobile.

DESIGN OF A BODY OF THE CAR

IF WE APPLY TRADITIONAL WAY THEN

  1. Starting with the basic shape of the vehicle ,start designing the body of the car.
  2. Make CAD models of the shapes of the Body.
  3. Perform Analysis and modifications- Perform CAE on the structure and modify/optimize the design for durability, vibration and packaging.
  4. Then approach the Manufacturing team with the final design.
  5. Manufacturing team takes up the CAD model and prepares tooling (dies, assembly process) as per the design.
  6. If there are any issues during this , the process has to be repeated by redesign

IT IS VERY TIME TAKING AND ALSO IT IS NOT COST EFFECTIVE THEREFORE WE NEED CONCURRENT ENGINEERING

IF WE APPLY CONCURRENT APPROACH THEN

  1. Starting with the basic shape of the vehicle ,start designing the body of the car.
  2. Make CAD models of the shapes of the Body.
  3. At the 3rd step (analysis) the manufacturing team is involved at an earlier stage.
  4. Modifications due to analysis are clubbed with modifications due to process.
  5. Once the design is released for final production it has already been validated by manufacturing team.

This saves a lot of design effort as well as effort of the manufacturing team and Makes the whole design process faster and smoother.
