autozygous refers to identical alleles (AA or aa) of a gene often results from practice of inbreeding or non-random mating due to small populaion size.

Small population size leads to a decline in heterozygosity due to allele fixation (where only one of the two allele of a gene gets selected and passed on to next generation). the choice of the allele being fixed in the population is very much random. This random change in allele frequency in a finite population is due to genetic drift.

So a population very strongly impacted by genetic drift is likely to display the highest degree of autozygosity.
